Two Sri Lankan fishing boats held by Indian coast guard

The Indian Coast Guard ship Vishwast apprehended two Sri Lankan fishing boats with 1000 kgs of fish catch during patrol off the Andhra Coast on Monday. A press release from the defence wing on Tuesday stated that Jiyasuru -5 and S-2 Srilankan boats with five and four crew members were apprehended for fishing without licence in the Indian exclusive economic zone.

The boats which were equipped with radar and long range high frequency communication equipments, posing high security risk, were booked for violating under three sections of maritime zones act.

The Indian Coast guard has been maintaining vigil along the eastern sea board. Coast Guard ships and aircraft are being regularly deployed to monitor suspicious activities at sea. Last year, 34 Srilankan fishing boats along with 173 crew were apprehended by the Coast Guard.
