Two Opposition Tamil MPs join ruling party in S Lanka

Mahinda Rajapaksa Government in Sri Lanka today was short of three members for a two-thirds majority in Parliament after two opposition members pledged their support.A statement by the office of the President here said that two opposition Members of Parliament from different political parties joined the government today taking the strength of the ruling alliance to 146 in the 225-member Parliament.’Mr Prabha Ganeshan of Democratic People's Front and Mr P Digambaram of the National Workers Front announced their decision to extend support to the government at the Temple Trees today (August 5). They spoke to the media in the presence of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and said they considered it their duty to support the government at this crucial juncture’, the statement said.However the opposition while acknowledging the meeting between the MPs and the President however denied reports of the two members throwing their weight behind the Government.’I have the fullest confidence in President Rajapaksa and I am sure that I could serve the Tamil people who elected me at the last general election by cooperating with the government,’ the Presidential Secretariat quoted Mr Ganeshan as saying.It further quoted him as saying that the United National Party obtained Tamil votes by giving false promises to the people and he had completely lost faith in the UNP.Mr Digambaram has been quoted as saying that he was elected to the Parliament by the estate workers and to safeguard their interests he decided to extend support to the government. ‘To serve the estate workers it is essential to work in close cooperation with the government,’ he said.National Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa and Western Provincial Council member Renuka Perera and were also present.In the April general election, the ruling combine led by President Rajapaksa bagged 144 seats in a House of 245 members. Two-third’s majority is required to amend the island nation’s constitution.AIR correspondent Kanchan Prasad reports from Colombo that although the opposition has denied that two MPs have crossed over and pledged support to the Rajapaksa regime , a press statement today by the President’s office asserted that they have changed their allegiance.A press communiqu’ by the President’s office today said that Mr Prabha Ganeshan of Democratic People's Front and Mr P Digambaram of the National Workers Front announced their decision to extend support to the government . According to the press statement, the two Tamil MPs considered it their duty to support the government at this crucial juncture.Mr Digambaram has been quoted as saying that he was elected to the Parliament by the estate workers and to safeguard their interests he decided to extend support to the government.In the April general election, the ruling combine led by President Rajapaksa bagged 144 seats in a House of 245 members. Two-third’s majority is required to amend the island nation’s constitution.With this crossover , Sri Lankan President is just three members short of the majority which is required to bring about fundamental changes in the constitution.
