To strengthen coastal patrolling in Eastern region, two more Hovercrafts will be inducted in the Coast Guard next year. Briefing newsmen in Chennai today, the D.I.G. Eastern Region Mr. B.S Yadav said already two hovercrafts vessels have been stationed at Mandapam in Rameshwaram to patrol the waters. The vessel is being used in rescuing stranded fishermen, anti poaching operations besides monitoring movement of suspected elements. He said due to the continuous patrolling, the influx of Sri Lankan refugees into Tamil Nadu has come down considerably. Giving details on the Hovercraft, Mr Yadav said the vessel is capable of cruising at a speed of 45 to 50 knots with full payload in zero wind and wave conditions. He said the crafts have ability to move at a higher speed over shallow waters and on land during hot pursuit to nab culprits.
