In Tamil Nadu, as campaign reaches a feverish pitch, the two major Dravidian parties leading formidable fronts are aggressively wooing voters, in what could turn to be a close battle for the ballot. The DMK President and Chief Minister Mr. Karunanidhi in the first round of campaign meetings has sought to highlight the freebies and subsidies given to the people, while the AIADMK General Secretary Ms. Jayalalitha in her road shows has targeted the ruling party on corruption, law and order and power shortage. Allegations and counter allegations galore as electioneering gains momentum. AIR correspondent reports that while the DMK Chief Mr Karunanidhi has addressed joint election meeting with leaders of alliance parties, the AIADMK Chief Ms.Jayalalitha is on her own crisscrossing the state. Meanwhile, returning officers in the 234 constituencies had rejected as many as 1,153 for various reasons during scrutiny of papers on Monday. The state Chief Electoral Officer Mr.Praveen Kumar said 3082 nominations were found in order. The maximum of candidates is 294 in Chennai district and the highest number of candidates in a constituency is 70 in Tirupur North. In an election related incident, the sitting DMK Member of Parliament Mr.Riteesh was arrested today by the police in a connection with a clash during campaign.
