Two JNU students sent to police remand for 3-days in sedition case

Two Jawaharlal Nehru University students – Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya have been sent to police remand for three days in a sedition case. The duo were arrested by Delhi Police after they surrendered on Tuesday night. The South Campus Police Station near JNU where they are being kept, was turned into a makeshift court room following a order by the Delhi High Court to maintain confidentiality during their remand proceedings.

During the hearing, the police sought seven days' custody of Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya. The duo had organised a controversial event at the JNU on February 9th where anti-India slogans were allegedly raised. Police have also applied for production of JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar, also arrested on sedition charges, so that all the three students can be interrogated together.

Earlier yesterday, Delhi High Court adjourned the hearing on Kanhaiya's bail plea till February 29th. The decision came as Delhi Police informed the High Court that they will seek fresh remand of Kanhaiya as two more students have been arrested on sedition charges. The counsel for Delhi Police contended that Kanhaiya's further police remand is necessary to confront the other two accused.
