Two jawans killed, 15 injured as INS Betwa slips at Naval dockyard

INS Betwa, a Brahmaputra-class guided missile frigate tipped over at Mumbai's Naval Dockyard this afternoon; killing two jawans and injuring 15 others. According to Navy Spokesperson Capt D K Sharma, the incident occurred during undocking when the ship's mast hit the dockyard ground.<br/><br/>Capt Sharma explained that the ship was being returned to sea after a refit when the systems tripped leading to the ship falling sideways.<br/><br/>Indigenously designed and built, INS Betwa is 3850-tonne ship, having a length of 126 metres. Commissioned in 2004, the ship is armed with surface to air missiles and torpedoes. The extent of the damage suffered by INS Betwa is still being assessed.<br/><br/>This is the second major incident involving INS Betwa. In 2014, the ship had collided with an unidentified object while approaching the Mumbai naval base. <br/><br/>A spate of accidents related to Western Naval Command had occurred in that period with INS Sindhuratna had reported a fire onboard while the explosion had occurred onboard submarine 'INS Sindhurakshak' in 2013.
