In Afghanistan suicide attackers in military uniform attacked a police station in Kabul’s busy central area this afternoon. Security officials said the first suicide bomber blew himself up outside the police station while the two others were attempting to get into the police compound while exchanging fire with forces. In the ensuing gun battle that lasted for about two hours 9 people, including two policemen were killed and 12 others injured. Kabul Police Chief Gen. Mohammad Ayub Salangi said the fighting ended by 3 p.m. local time. He said that two police officers have been killed and one is injured. But he confirmed that all three suicide attackers had also been killed. The attack took place hours after Afghan President Hamid Karzai told reporters at a press conference that the United States is in direct peace talks with the Taliban to end decade long war in Afghanistan. Yesterday the UN Security Council has voted unanimously to treat Taliban and Al-Qaeda separately so that peace negotiation can be started. Susan Rice, the American Ambassador to the UN also hoped that it would give a clear message to the Taliban that there is a future for those who renounce violence and abide by the Afghan constitution. But today’s attack do not fulfill that hope.
