Two AIIMS-like institutes in Uttar Pradesh to come up in 12th 5-year plan

The Planning Commission has agreed in principle to allocate funds forsetting up two AIIMS-like institutes in Uttar Pradesh.To be located at Jhansi and Gorakhpur, the proposed institutes willcome up during the 12th plan period.Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said this in the Lok Sabha today.He was replying to a calling attention on the spread of Encephalitisand Brain Fever in the country, particularly in eastern Uttar Pradesh,West Bengal and Bihar. The motion was raised by Yogi Aditya Nath, BJPand four others. The Minister said there is a cure for only JapaneseEncephalitis and for no other viral disease prevalent in the affectedareas. Adequate quantities of vaccines have been supplied to theaffected areas. Special vaccination programmes have also been carriedout.Japanese Encephalitis is caused mainly by improper sanitation andimpure drinking water. Mr. Azad said, the Pune-based NationalVirological Institute has succeeded in identifying the enterovirusthat causes the disease.Mr. Azad said, the vaccine to cure Japanese Encephalitis will now beproduced in India. So far, it has been imported from Japan.
