Turn around plan for ailing Power Cos

The government is working on a turn -around plan for ailing companies that distribute power to seven major power consuming states. The government has set up an expert group to suggest restructuring of power utilities of these states. The Panel in the first phase, will look into the financial health of discoms in seven states – Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh, besides Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and suggest a turnaround plan. According to a member of the committee, the suggestions will be submitted in the next six months. Some of the interim recommendations on the issue of open access have already been submitted and are presently being vetted by the Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahuwalia, in consultation with the Law Ministry. The committee set up under the chairmanship of Planning Commission Member B K Chaturvedi comprises an RBI Deputy Governor and Secretaries of leading electricity consuming states of Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, besides officials from the Ministry of Power.The discoms in other states will be looked at in the second phase.AIR correspondent reports, this comes in the backdrop of a recent government report that revealed that the accumulated losses of the power utilities across the country ran into 1.50 lakh crore rupees and annual losses were around 55 thousand crore rupees, putting a severe strain on the financial health of the distribution utilities.
