Turkey seeks enhanced bilateral economic ties with India

Turkey has sought enhanced bilateral economic co-operation with India. Talking to All India Radio in New Delhi Tuesday morning the visiting President of Turkey Mr. Abdullah Gul said that both the countries are booming economies and strategically located to be partners in the progress.<br/><br/>Counter terrorism, and issues related to peace and stability in Afghanistan are believed to have dominated the talks between the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the visiting Turkish President. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent quoting informed sources report that the two leaders also took stock of the situation in Afghanistan and the role of international community in that country. A whole range of bilateral and regional issues were also covered in the talks. <br/><br/>In the first trip to India by a Turkish president in 15 years, Abdullah G’l is aiming to strengthen economic cooperation with South Asia’s rising star.<br/><br/>The trade volume between Turkey and India has doubled in the past three years, increasing to 3 billion US dollars, but, is below the potential. Because of the global downturn, however, Turkey’s foreign trade decreased in general. <br/><br/>Indian investments in Turkey have exceeded 1.2 billion US dollars. India is also looking forward to a free trade agreement with Turkey. The visit has been however over shadowed by the fact that Turkey did not invite India to a regional peace conference for Afghanistan’s neighbors in Istanbul early February. <br/><br/>India has so far provided 1.3 billion US dollars in assistance to war-torn Afghanistan by building transmission lines, hospitals, schools, as well as providing training in different areas.<br/> <br/>The President of Turkey will address the captains of Indian industry later in the day. He will also visit Agra and Mumbai during his visit. Mr. Gul arrived in New Delhi on Sunday and is on a five day state visit of the country. He was given a ceremonial reception at the forecourts of Rashtrapati Bhawan Tuesday morning.
