The commander of US and international troops in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson has said Pakistan is a heaven for insurgents from the Taliban, the Haqqani network and other militant Islamist groups. <br/><br/>Briefing the Senate Armed Services Committee in Washington, he spoke about security in Afghanistan in terms of the often-difficult US relationship with Pakistan and said, the complex relationship with Islamabad is best assessed through a holistic review. <br/><br/>He said, he did not have enough troops to adequately advise Afghan forces on the ground and need thousands more troops to break a stalemate with the Taliban.'<br/><br/>Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump and his Afghan counterpart Ashraf Ghani have discussed security situation in Afghanistan. White House said in a statement that both the leaders in a telephone call discussed about opportunities to strengthen ties, counter-terrorism cooperation and economic development. The statement said that Mr Trump also emphasized the continuing importance of the US – Afghanistan Strategic Partnership and his support for Mr Ghani's Government, which is faced with an emboldened Taliban-led insurgency.
