US President Donald Trump has agreed to honour the America's One China policy by acknowledging that China has sovereignty over self-ruled Taiwan. A White House statement said that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation last night and President Trump agreed, at the request of President Xi, to honor 'One China' policy. <br/><br/>Describing the call as extremely cordial, White House said both the countries will engage in discussions and negotiations on various issues of mutual interest. The two leaders also discussed a wide range of issues and had invited each other to visit.<br/>China has appreciated Trump's upholding of the One China policy. In a statement read out on Chinese state television, Xi said, the United States and China are cooperative partners, and through joint efforts both the countries can push bilateral relations to a historic new high. China sees Taiwan as a breakaway province to be reunited with the mainland, by force if necessary. The US cut formal ties with Taiwan in 1979.
