Truckers around the country proceeded on a nationwide indefinite strike this morning on the call of All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) to protest against the present toll system. The transporters went on strike after talks between the government and AIMTC delegation failed yesterday as the truckers' body said the offer of electronic-toll system by December was not practical. <br/><br/>Essential commodities like milk, vegetables and medicine have been kept off the purview of the strike. Another truckers body AITWA has said that it is not joining the strike. AIMTC is demanding scrapping of toll system terming it a tool of harassment and one-time payment of taxes besides simplification of TDS.<br/><br/>Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari yesterday offered electronic-toll system pan-India by December to address their concerns but made it clear that scrapping of toll system is not possible.<br/><br/>In Madhya Pradesh, Regional Transporters Welfare Association has claimed that about seven lakh trucks stopped operating from this morning. But essential services like milk supply medicines, gas cylinders and vegetables have been exempted from the strike in the state.<br/><br/>The Odisha truckers' association today joined the nationwide indefinite strike called by the All India Motor Transport Congress demanding scrapping of the present toll system and one-time payment of taxes. About 2 lakh trucks from the State joined the strike. <br/><br/>The Odisha truckers' body is also demanding non-implementation of green tax proposed by the state government. The government has recently announced that a green tax would be imposed on vehicles older than 15 years to discourage such vehicles from plying on road.<br/><br/>In Tamil Nadu lakhs of lorry owners today joined the nationwide indefinite strike in demand for removal of tolls from national highways. Tamil Nadu Lorry owners Sammelan president Nallathamby said that more than 7 lakh lorries in the state did not ply. In many tolls of the state including Tiruchirapalli and Namakkal lorry owners demonstrated in support of their demands.
