Tropical cyclone hits Australia's northeast coast

A tropical cyclone smashed into Australia's northeast coast on Sunday, with winds up to 200 kilometres an hour damaging buildings, felling trees and cutting power to thousands of homes. State Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said cyclone Ului made landfall near Queensland's Whitsunday islands, leaving 60,000 properties without power.

Officials are assessing the impact of Ului, which has been downgraded since making landfall near the tourist town of Airlie Beach. The Bureau of Meteorology said the storm is continuing to move inland but is now below cyclone strength after weakening rapidly when it hit land.
