Tripartite talks on Gorkhaland issue to be held in Darjeeling tomorrow

The Tripartite talks on Gorkhaland issue will be held in Darjeeling tomorrow. The Home Secretary, Mr. G.K. Pillai will represent the Centre, while the Chief Secretary of West Bengal government will represent the state at the talks with the GJM. This is the fourth tripartite meeting on the issue. In the last meeting held in August, the Centre had agreed to abolish Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council and work for the setting up of an alternative administrative frame work to replace it. The meeting had also decided on the appointment of an interlocutor to carry forward the discussions. <br/>Ahead of the talks, the Union Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee has said that the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, GJM, should not stick to its demand for a separate state and that the issue can be resolved through dialouge. The GJM, however, has said that it will go to the talks on the one point agenda of Gorkhaland. Earlier, responding to the Home Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram's appeal, the GJM temporarily suspended the fast-unto-death programme before the talks . The Home Minister in his appeal had said that there is a need to hold the talks in a conducive atmosphere and, therefore, the GJM should give up its agitational approach on the eve of such talks.
