Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has asserted that tribal leaders would be consulted before any NATO offensive to oust the Taliban from their birth center in Kandahar. Mr. Karzai on a high-security visit to Kandahar yesterday with the head of NATO forces General Stanley McChrystal, interacted with hundreds of tribal leaders.

He asserted that there won't be a military operation unless they are happy about the upcoming military operation in wake of arrival of thousands of additional US troops. Tribal leaders expressed their concern over poor governance and corruption issues while questioning the long-tern objective of a military operation. US-led NATO forces are attaching too much importance to security scenario in Taliban stronghold of Kandahar but many are worried about the displacement of population and civilian casualties it may cause.

There were a series of incidents of civilian casualties in past few months leading to growing distance between western governments and Afghan President. Mr. Karzai criticized Western nations of interference during last year Presidential elections and trying to repeat it during upcoming Parliamentary elections in September.
