Early trends of the assembly elections in five states show that Samajwadi party is leading in Uttar Pradesh, Congress in Manipur and SAD in Punjab. There is a neck and neck fight in Uttrakhand with Congress and BJP leading in six constituencies each.

In Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party is leading in 31 constituencies, BSP 14, BJP 5 and Congress four. Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Shivpal Singh Yadav of Samajwadi Party is leading in Jaswantnagar constituency.
