Transport workers go on strike against new law in Bangladesh

<h3><br />''</h3>Transport workers in several parts of Bangladesh have gone on strike against the recently implemented Transport Act which has enhanced fines many fold and introduced harsh punishment for traffic offenses. <br />''<br />''According to media reports bus services in many districts like Kushtia, Meherpur, Khulna, Satkhira, Rajshahi, Meherpur among others were not functioning due to the strike.<br />''<br />''In the meanwhile, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) continued its drive against traffic rule violation in Dhaka. It filed cases and imposed fine on the traffic rule violators in the city.<br />''<br />''The new transport law was passed in October last year following a big student movement demanding safer roads after two students were killed in road accident in Dhaka. The law came into force from 1st of this month but its implementation started from Sunday.<br />''<br />''The new act makes many of the serious traffic offenses like killing due to rash and negligent driving non-bailable with maximum punishment of five years. Driving without license is punishable with Tk 25,000 fine or 6 months in jail or both. The offense of driving vehicle without registration now attracts Tk 50, 000 fine or six months jail or both. The highest punishment for honking banned horns is three months' jail term or Tk 10,000 fine or both.<br />''<br />''<span style="color: #222222;">Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said today that the government will go ahead with the implementation of new transport act. He urged the transport owners and workers not to go on strike.</span><br />
