In Assam, 4 rhinos are being translocated from Kaziranga National Park to Manas National Park today. Both the parks are in the coveted list of World Heritage sites. Official sources said that the rhinos are likely to be released in Manas National Park tomorrow. Activities of the rhinos will be observed through radio collars. Another 6 rhinos will be translocated between the two parks within this month.It may be recalled that Assam is the home of the highest number of one-horn rhinoceros in the world. Official data revealed that, as per 2009 survey, a total of 2,301 rhinos were found in the state.Assam Wildlife’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forest Suresh Chand said that the forest department has set the target of increasing the total number of rhino to 3000 under Indian Rhino Vision by 2020. Also the genetic breed of rhinos is likely to be increased through it. The forest department in association with other stakeholders will also translocate rhinos to Laokhowa, Burachapari and Dibru-Saikhowa sanctuary. Moreover, preparation is on to conduct fresh survey of rhinos in Kaziranga, Ornag and Pobitara parks by next month.
