TRAI slams Facebook for Free Basic campaign, calls initiative crudely majoritarian

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has slammed the Facebook for its Free Basics platform, as a crudely majoritarian and orchestrated opinion poll. In a letter written to Facebook, the Telecom Authority said the campaign by Facebook to defend its free Internet platform Free Basics in India is wholly misplaced. The regulator said Facebook is misleading its users with its Save Free Basics campaign and the responses sent by it were not relevant to the questions posed in the consultation paper.

Earlier the TRAI had banned the service and issued consultation paper over the validity of differential pricing for some content services by ISPs. On the TRAI'S consultation paper, Facebook had asked its users to support Free Basics by agreeing to send an email in the form of a template to the regulator. The TRAI received 2.4 million comments on its paper, of which almost 1.8 million were from Facebook users.
