TRAI sets limit for concessional SMS at 100 per day per SIM

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its latest directive to be implemented in 15 days, has set the limit for concessional SMS at 100 per day per SIM. According to the latest measures, there is no maximum limit for SMS, but consumers will be charged not less than 50 paisa per SMS once it crosses 100 a day.The TRAI directives are aimed at curbing unsolicited SMS and calls which continue to be a menace for mobile users. The new measures come in the back drop of misuse even after the regulator has imposed the SMS Spam Guidelines. To restrict unregistered telemarketers sending bulk promotional SMSs using machines, TRAI has also asked access providers to work out a solution within the next three months, which will ensure that no commercial SMSs are sent containing same or similar characters or strings or variants from any source or number. The solution will ensure that not more than 200 SMSs with such similar signature are sent in an hour.An official statement said that, however, registered telemarketers, transactional message sending entities and telephone numbers exempted by the Authority are excluded from this provision.Normal consumers sending non-commercial SMSs will also not be affected by this measure.A complaint can be registered through SMS by forwarding the spam SMS to 1909 after appending the telephone number and date of receipt of the SMS.Mobile operators have also been asked to set-up a web-based complaint registering system and a dedicated e-mail address to receive such complaints on spam messages and calls, as per the TRAI order. The latest Telecom Regulator's orders have been put on TRAI's website.
