TRAI recommends cancellation of 62 licences for 2G services awarded to five companies

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, TRAI, has recommended cancellation of 62 licences for 2G services awarded to five companies including Swan, Uninor and Videocon as they have not met roll out conditions. Recommending penalty for non-compliance with the roll-out obligations, the TRAI said that this action will vacate the enormous amount of spectrum that can be given to companies serious about the meeting deadline. Sources in TRAI said that the recommendation for this action was made to the Telecom Ministry. The action comes amid the Comptroller and Auditor General slamming the Telecom Ministry for irregularities and impropriety in giving licenses to new players in 2008, causing huge losses to the exchequer.
