Telecom sector regulator TRAI has asked telecom operators to add more towers and reinforce 2G networks, among other measures, to check call drops. In a technical paper on call drops, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said, there is an urgent need to increase the number of towers so as to cater to the demands of a growing subscriber base.

AIR correspondent reports, TRAI has suggested a clutch of measures at the operator-end to reduce call drops, including dynamic channel allocation, multiple call routing and optimised resource management. It also suggested to use mobile signal boosters at the users' buildings or premises to check the problem. TRAI has also urged operators not to neglect 2G coverage amid the rising popularity of 3G. Last month, the TRAI mandated that telecom companies from January 1st should compensate users at the rate of one rupee per dropped call, with a ceiling of three dropped calls per day or 3 rupees per day. TRAI said, it issued the regulations after considering comments of all the stakeholders. However, the telecom operators had also warned that mobile tariff will go up if they are forced to pay compensation for dropped calls.
