Trade, Investment, strategic cooperation & counter-terrorism to top agenda in today's India-EU Summit talks

The Broad Based Trade and Investment Agreement, strategic cooperation, counter-terrorism issues are high on agenda in the summit level meeting between Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the European Union President Harman Van Rompuy in the Belgian capital Brussels today. Non-traditional threats to security, situation in Afghanistan, climate change will also figure in the talks.India and the EU which consists of 27 countries are now at a crucial stage of negotiations for a free trade agreement. Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said in Brussels on the eve of the summit that a roadmap for negotiations from now to March has been finalized and mutually agreed upon. Talking exclusively to All India Radio News in Brussels said that the Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar said that the deal will benefit both the parties.Mr. Khullar urged the media not to speculate on the outcome of the pact and wait till the agreement is signed.Earlier in the day, official sources said that India’s position on intellectual property rights will be respected in the pact. The issue of easy movement of Indian professionals in to the EU zone is also being taken care of. Dr. Manmohan Singh will later hold a bilateral meeting with the Belgian leadership to discuss the potential for diversification in trade and related aspects The Indian Ambassador in Brussels Dr. J.Bhagwati told AIR News that Belgium is the third largest trade partner of India.Dr. Manmohan Singh arrived in Brussels on a two nation visit of Belgium and Germany.New Delhi said that India and China have managed to maintain good relations despite all issues. Official sources said in Brussels that the two countries are working to resolve the boundary issue through dialogue and the Indo-China border remains peaceful. Referring to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s forthcoming visit to India, they said, the issues of stapled visa, counter-terrorism and addressing the imbalance of trade will be the focus of attention during the talks between the two sides.
