To ensure accident- free journey of Railways passengers, Train Protection Warning System, TPWS will be installed in a phased manner on the different routes of Railways. TPWS ensures automatic application of emergency brakes in case the engine driver jumps the red signal. Initially, the system will be installed on the busy Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi- Kolkata route in the first phase.
The cost of TPWS is 50 lakh rupees per kilometre. The trial of TPWS is already being done on the 200 km Delhi-Agra route and the 60 km Chennai-Gumudipundi route under a pilot project for which the railways have earmarked 250 rupees crore. As per the plan, 2500 km automatic signalling system route with TPWS will be covered in the first phase.
AIR correspondent reports that of the total 2763 train accidents between 2000 and 2010, more than 50 per cent accidents have been attributed to failure of railway staff.
