Torrential rains lash TN

In Tamil Nadu, torrential rains that have lashing several districts have wreaked a havoc claming 43 lives besides paralyzing normal life. Nilgris district reported the highest death of 13, including 8 killed in landslides triggered by heavy rains. Reports reaching Chennai say the monsoon rains have led to flooding of rivers and excess water being released from overflowing dams inundating several nearby areas. Standing crops in the delta districts of Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur,Cuddalore have been submerged. The Public Works Department issued the first flood warning as the Vaigai dam reached 66 feet. People living along the banks and low lying areas in Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Sivagangai and Ramathapuram have been sounded of the warning.<br/><br/>Chief Minister Mr. Karunanidhi has announced an exgratia of one lakh each to the families of 8 persons killed in landslides in Nilgris. Schools and colleges in 19 districts remained closed today. Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary Mr. K.S.Sripathy today reviewed the flood situation with the collectors of Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore, Tiruneveli, Nilgris, coimbatore , Thiruvallur, Tiruchy, Dindigul and Karur through video conferencing.<br/><br/>The met office said the low pressure area which laid over Comorin might become more marked. A trough from this extends from west central Bay of Bengal across Gulf of Mannar and South West bay off Tamil Nadu. Under its influence, rain is likely to occur at most places over coastal Tamil Nadu and many places over interior Tamil Nadu during the next 24 hours.
