Torrential rain claim over 100 lives in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh

Torrential rain has claimed more than 100 lives in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa said the situation in Raichur, Bellary, Bijapaur,Gadag, Bagalkote and Dharwad is very grim. With 35 more deaths reported yesterday, the toll in the state since Thursday night has risen to 86. More than 20,000 houses have collapsed, many areas inundated and road services affected in some parts.Helicopters have been pressed into the service for rescue operations. The Indian Air Force yesterday helped save 44 lives trapped in the flood waters in Bellary and Raichur districts of Karnatka. The IAF personnel evacuated about 12 people caught in neck-level deep water in low-lying areas of the Bellary district and dropped them at safe places and saved 32 lives from Mantralayam in Raichur district. A round-the-clock flood relief cell had been set up at Air Force station Yelahanka and Hakimpet to meet the situation. They also dropping about 750 Kgs of relief material mainly food packets in and around the flood-hit areas.88 food camps have been set up and schools and community halls are being used as temporary relief camps. One lakh rupees each has been released to the family of the deceased.In Andhra Pradesh, the situation is equally grim in Krishna, Kurnool and Mahabubnagar districts, where thousands of people are still stranded in floodwaters due to heavy rains that battered the state for the past four days. Heavy rain claimed 18 lives. Unconfirmed reports, however, put the death toll at 27. Massive rescue operations are on to evacuate about 20,000 people from inundated areas in several districts of the state. Army personnel and National Disaster Reserve Force have also deployed in rescue operations. 14 trains diverted on Guntakal division due to flooding. Chief Minister K Roasaiah is reviewing the flood situation constantly.In Orissa, incessant rain across the state has caused flash floods in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts. This has affected more than 60,000 people in 103 villages. Flood water of Budhabalang, Gangahar, Sono, Kansabas and Jalaka rivers have entered the villages. The people from several areas in Mayurbhanj and Balasore are being shifted to safer places.The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has assured Andhra Pradesh of all help from the Centre to cope with the situation arising out of the calamity triggered by the "unprecedented" flood in the state. According to official sources in Hyderabad, the assurance was given to Chief Minister K Rosaiah who spoke to him over phone. Mr Rosaiah also spoke to Home Minister P Chidambaram and Defence Minister A K Antony seeking their help in conducting relief and rescue operations.
