In Kerala, the death toll in the stampede incident involving Ayyappa devotees at Uppupara in Iddukki district has risen to 106. Nearly half of victims have been identified and the post-mortem of remaining bodies is being done at the Kumili Community Health Centre. Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan has rushed to the spot from Kannur by helicopter. Official sources said that two response teams of the National Disaster Management Authority are being sent to the spot. Meanwhile, the State Government has declared a holiday today in view of the tragedy. A three-day State mourning has also been declared. Earlier, State Finance Minister Dr. Thomas Issac said in Vandiperriyr that the Government would bear the expenses for despatching the bodies of the victims to their respective native places. He said the Government will would also bear the expenses of the treatment of all those admitted in various hospitals. He also announced Rs 5,000 as immediate relief to the kin of the deceased. Condoling the deaths, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has sanctioned a relief of Rs 1 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 to those injured from the Prime Minister's relief fund.
