The Japanese Olympic Committee has formally announced that Tokyo will bid to host the 2020 Games as a symbol of Japan's determination to recover from the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March. In 2009, Tokyo lost to Rio de Janeiro in the race to host the 2016 Games. Rome and Madrid have announced their candidatures for 2020, while Istanbul and Doha are also reportedly considering bids.
