Today is World Hepatitis Day. Several functions, seminars are being organised across the world to increase the awareness and understanding of viral hepatitis and the diseases that it causes. In Delhi, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS, released a medical report suggesting that there are about three crore patients in the country. Briefing reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday, Dr. S.K. Acharya, Head of the Gastrology Department, AIIMS, said that the ace hospital provides an economical treatment of the hazardous disease. Approximately 500 million people worldwide have either hepatitis B or hepatitis C. If left untreated, hepatitis B or C can lead to advanced liver scarring and other complications, including liver cancer. Every year 1.5 million people die from either hepatitis B or C. Experts believe that Hepatitis is spreading like AIDS but it can be overcome by adopting preventive measures and running awareness campaign among the masses.
