The 335 Martyrdom day of the 9th Sikh Guru Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji is being observed today at home and abroad with devotion and religious fervor. It was on this day in 1675 AD that the 9th Guru sacrificed his life during the reign of Mughal Emperor Auragzeb at Chandini Chowk in the walled city of Delhi against religious intolerance. He was martyred as he voiced for the freedom of worship and religion against forcible conversions. To frighten him three of his disciples Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das, Bhai Dayala were tortured to death. His head was taken to Anantpur Sahib in Punjab where it was cremated by his son and the 10th Guru Guru Gobind Singh ji.His body was brought to village Rekabganj near Central Secretariat New Delhi by his other devotee. Gurdwara Seesganj stands at Chandini Chowk and Anantpur Sahib while Gurdwara Rekabganj stands near central secretariat where his body was cremated by setting his house on fire. Sikhs throng the Gurdwarsa since early morning to listen to shabad kirtan and discourses on the life and works of Guru Teg Bahadur ji.Guru ka Langar that is free community kitchen has been arranged at various gurdwardas for all the people. In a message on the occasion of the martyrdom day, the President , Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil said, may his teachings inspire the country to work unitedly to promote the causes of national integration, communal harmony and service to humanity. She said that on the sacred day let the people resolve to prove worthy of his legacy. The President has sent the message from the United Arab Emirates, where she is currently on a State Visit.
