The Tamil Nadu Government gave the nod for commissioning of the Kundakulam nuclear power project and sought the co-operation of the people in the area for resuming work in the 1000 MW plant.A resolution to this effect was adopted at the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ms. Jayalalitha in Chennai on Monday.The resolution said the reports submitted by the expert committees constituted by the central and state governments had categorically stated that the nuclear power plant was absolutely safe and there was no chance of a tsunami or an earthquake occurring in the area. Besides this, the two committees had made it clear that the livelihood of the fishermen would not be affected by the project.Taking note of the reports, the Tamil Nadu government said it had decided to facilitate the commissioning of the power plant.The cabinet also decided to allocate 500 crore rupees to establish a boat repairing facility, a cold storage plant and to construct houses for fishermen in Kundankulam area.Meanwhile, the police have begun a crackdown on the anti-kundankulam protestors. Police sources said 9 persons including five key functionaries of anti-kundankulam nuclear power plant were arrested Monday morning for holding demonstrations without permission and preventing nuclear power corporation officials from discharging their duty.
