In Tamil Nadu, local body elections will be held in two phases on October 17 and 19. The State Election Commissioner S.S. Ayyar yesterday said that in the first phase, elections will be held for nine Municipal Corporations, 60 Municipalities, 259 Town Panchayats and 191 Panchayat Unions. In the second phase, sixty five Municipalities, 270 Town Panchayats, 194 Panchayat Unions will face elections. Mr. Aiyar said that filing of nominations would begin today. The last date for filing nomination is 29th of this month and the scrutiny will be held on the 30th. The last date for withdrawal is October 3.Counting of votes will be on October 21 and the swearing-in ceremony and the first meeting of the representatives of local bodies who are directly elected will be held on October 25.In the case of those who are indirectly elected, the swearing-in ceremony will be held on October 29.There was no announcement regarding the Tiruchi Corporation as the Madras High Court had yesterday quashed the Government’s order for the inclusion of Tiruverumbur Town Panchayat under the Corporation limits issued last year. Four other petitions on other four Panchayats are pending at the Court.
