Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa has demanded immediate action through diplomatic channels for the release of the total of 29 fishermen and 53 fishing boats from Srilankan custody. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, she has pointed out the arrest of the 15 fishermen in the last two days by the naval forces of the neighbouring country on charges of poaching. Previously there were 14 fishermen from the state lodged in Srilankan prisons.

In the letter, Ms Jayalalithaa has said non-release of boats of the fishermen would lead to their decay, endangering the livelihood. Most often, Srilankan authorities release the fishermen after legal proceedings though the apprehended boats continue to be detained.
