TN CM urges Centre to deny permission to Karnataka for Mekedatu dam

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy has urged the Centre to deny permission to Karnataka's request for a new reservoir across the inter-state river Cauvery. The upper-basin state, Karnataka has sought permission for Terms of Reference of the Union Environment Ministry for constructing the proposed Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir project on its side.
''
'' In a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, Mr Palaniswamy has said the move by Karnataka is in utter violation of the Final Order of the Cauvery Tribunal and the Supreme Court judgement, given in February last year.
'' Tamil Nadu CM has pointed out that Karnataka has not obtained the prior concurrence of Tamil Nadu and other co-basin States for the proposed project.
''
'' He has said, Cauvery being a deficit Basin, construction of a reservoir at Mekedatu or any project in any place by upper riparian States across it will drastically affect the lower riparian States in getting their due share of water. He has highlighted that the matter is now sub-judice as it is pending before the Supreme Court.
''
'' The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has also asked the Prime Minister to personally intervene in the matter and direct Central Water Commission to outrightly reject the Mekedatu reservoir proposal and return the Detailed Project Report about it.
''
''
''Meanwhile, all major political parties in Tamil Nadu have strongly opposed Karnataka's move. They have also condemned that the upper riparian state is not releasing even a drop of water to Tamil Nadu, though the Cauvery Water Management Authority instituted by the Centre has directed the release of 9.19 tmc feet of water as June month's share.
