TN CM seeks PM's intervention for withdrawal of recommendations for environmental study on dam across River Siruvani by Kerala

Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's immediate intervention for the withdrawal of a Union Environment and Forest Ministry panel's recommendations for an environmental study on the proposed dam across the River Siruvani by Kerala.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, she has said, Siruvani is an inter-state river and a tributary of the River Cauvery. She has charged that the Ministry's Expert Appraisal Committee for River Valleys and Hydro-Electric Projects has given its recommendations in an unwarranted haste, without getting any comments from Tamil Nadu.

She has averred that the proposal was not in the regular subject of the Committee when it met in the second week of this month but taken up as an additional agenda, without the knowledge of Tamil Nadu.

As the Cauvery issue is sub judice and the Cauvery Management Board is yet to be formed, and as River Siruvani is also covered by the Cauvery Tribunal verdict, Ms Jayalalithaa has said, the party-states need to wait for a judicial resolution to the issue, before initiating any new proposals in the Cauvery basin and its sub-basin areas.
