TN CM Panneerselvam seeks centre to promulgate ordinance for resumption of Jallikattu

Tamil Nadu chief minister O.Panneerselvam has sought the Centre to promulgate an ordinance immediately for the resumption of the game Jallikattu. With Pongal festivities fast approaching, the demand for revival of the traditional game has gained momentum in the state.<br/><br/>Various political parties and cultural organizations have staged demonstrations seeking its resumption that remains stalled since 2014 due to an apex court order.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, Mr O.Panneerselvam has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying Jallikattu is an integral part of the harvest festivities. He has pressed for an amendment in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 specifically exempting the bull taming game in addition to other exemptions already provided in the Act. The game remains stalled for the last two years.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, Union Minister and senior BJP leader in Tamil Nadu Pon Radhakrishnan has said the Centre is awaiting final verdict of the Supreme Court on the case related to the game. Responding to queries of the media at Mannarkudi near Tiruvarur, he said departmental actions are being taken to de-notify bulls from the list of performing animals that was notified by the Union Environment and Forests Ministry in 2011 to favour the bull taming game.
