Billed as the biggest in South Asia, the Anna Centenary Library built at a cost of 180 crore rupees will be inaugurated by the Tamil Nadu Chief minister Mr M.Karunanidhi in Chennai this evening. Modelled on the world class Alexandria library, the new library would be one of the first public libraries in the country to have an exclusive Braille section to help people with visual impairment access books.With a plinth area of 3.75 lakh square feet, the fully air-conditioned library comprises of ground and eight floors. It has two conference halls and an amphitheatre. The library when fully complete will have a collection of over 12 Lakh books in different languages.An important feature is that the library has become a partner of World Digital Library. The agreement will help users of the Anna Centenary Library to access primary materials from countries and cultures around the world available on the internet free of cost and in different languages. AIR correspondent reports that the all floors of the building are exclusive to a particular section and sensitivities of the under privileged have been taken care of with the setting up of own users section for people who do not have reading space in their homes.
