TN CM Jaya sends letter to PM Modi over fishermen arrest issue

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalaithaa has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and ensure immediate release of Indian fishermen lodged in Lankan jail as the the continuing saga of Sri Lankan Navy apprehending Tamil fishermen at the international maritime boundary line has created tension in fishermen hamlets. <br/><br/>She urged that centre should take up the matter with Sri Lankan government and secure the release of 104 Tamil fishermen and their 66 fishing boats. <br/><br/>Sri Lankan Navy had arrested twenty Tamil fishermen last night for alleged poaching in Lankan waters. Local Tamil fishermen urged the government to secure the immediate release of more than 100 fellow fishermen languishing in Lankan jail. They want the innocent fishermen to be released well before Pongal Tamil festival to be celebrated next week. The arrest of 20 Tamil fishermen from Nagapattinam, Rameswaram and Jagadapattinam has spread a pall of gloom in fishermen hamlets. <br/><br/>The local fishermen want their fishing boats to be returned as their livelihood is badly affected. The fishermen say that if the boast are kept idle and exposed to rain it will get damaged. Sri Lanka has earlier released Tamil fishermen on goodwill gesture before festival times but detained boats as deterrent measure.
