Time ripe for unleashing financial sector reforms says PM

The Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh has said that government is now better placed to unleash financial sector reforms. Inaugurating the India Economic summit in New Delhi this morning, the Prime Minister said the fiscal stimulus given in the wake of economic meltdown will however be withdrawn by the next fiscal. Giving details, Dr Singh said that government will try to evolve a political consensus for passage of legislation required for reforms in the insurance and pension sector. A decision to sell 10 percent equity of some profit making PSU's has already been taken.<br/><br/>Seeking more Foreign Direct Investment, FDI, Prime Minister said the government aims to further simplify the procedures to attract more FDI. Dr. Singh said returning to high growth would require strong domestic demand and the government seeks to achieve this objective through increased investment in infrastructure sectors like power, roads, ports, airports, telecom, irrigation and urban amenities. He said while some projects will be funded directly by government, public -private partnership route will be largely followed. Dr Singh added that with a normal monsoon next year, the economy is expected to grow by seven per cent in the next fiscal.<br/><br/>Referring to the forthcoming climate change summit being held in Copenhagen next month, Dr Manmohan Singh pledged to work purposefully with the international community to deal with this issue. He however asked the rich club of nations to finance developing countries for getting technology for working on limiting green house gasses. Our Correspondent reports that Prime Minister spelt out India's response to many other issues setting the tone for the deliberations. While advocating to deal with international terrorism resolutely , Dr. Singh made his anxiety known that growing violence in Pakistan and Afghanistan is a grave cause of concern for India. It is expected that the conclave will deliberate on the challenges identified by Dr. Singh and come out with a blue print to deal with them to make the world prosperous, peacefully and free from the anxiety of climate change.
