Tihar jail inmates may soon be given UIDs

Tihar jail inmates may soon be given Unique Identification Numbers or Aadhaar so that they can avail the benefits of Aadhaar scheme once they walk free. Aadhaar is a 12 digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India,UIDAI, on behalf of the Government.Tihar authorities have decided to ask Aadhaar officials to enrol the prisoners inside the jail premises. According to the Spokesman of the Tihar Jail in Delhi, authorities are in touch with UID departments and talks are going on in this regard. Jail authorities have also requested the sub-divisional magistrate of Rajouri Garden area in the city to get the machines installed inside the jail premises so that photos and biometric scanning of fingerprints and iris of the inmates could be collected.Those interested to enroll themselves will have to produce an identity proof and their temporary address will be the jail address and their permanent one which has been mentioned in the jail records.
