Tight security arrangements for Rabbani’s funeral

In Afghanistan tight security arrangements have been made for the funeral of former President Burhanuddin Rabbani. President Hamid Karzai will lead the mourners in paying their last respects to Prof. Rabbani. The ceremony is likely to start in the heavily fortified presidential palace at 1100 am (IST) with Rabbani's body to be buried near the home on the top of a hill overlooking Kabul. Officials said police and security forces have been kept on the highest state of alert for the funeral. As a respect for the slain leader government has declared three days state morning. Prof. Rabbani was killed at his home in high security Wazir Akbar Khan area of Kabul last Tuesday by a suicide bomber wearing explosives in his turban. The bomber posed as a Taliban messenger and detonated the explosives as Prof. Rabbanik embraced his host in a gesture of greeting. Prof. Rabbani was President of Afghanistan during the 1992-1996 and last October he was appointed chairman of the High Peace Council to broker peace with insurgents.
