In Nepal, three major political parties- Nepali Congress, CPN (UML) and the opposition Unified CPN(Maoist) – have identified six key issues to reach a consensus on resolving the current political impasse. A meeting of the senior leaders of the three parties held in Kathmandu last night decided to review all past agreements and identify the causes of mistrust among the political parties with a focus on timely drafting of the new constitution and completing the peace process.Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Unified CPN (Maoist) Dr. Baburam Bhattarai said political consensus and power sharing are an integral part of the peace process in the current phase of transitional period. He said the meeting set the agendas to hold serious discussions among the parties on ending the political impasse.Nepali Congress Spokesperson Arjun Narsingh K.C described the meeting as a good beginning and said the need of the hour is to narrow down the differences among the parties.AIR correspondent C.K. Dorjee reports from Kathmandu that the meeting identified six major issues to be discussed by the top leaders of the three major parties who will meet within the next few days to find a consensus to end the political stalemate. These issues included reviewing the implementation of 12-point and other agreements reached among the parties and forging consensus on the contentious issues to complete the drafting of the new constitution, rehabilitating and integrating the Maoist combatants, addressing the Maoists’ demand on correcting the President’s move on the army chief row, power sharing arrangement between the President and the Prime Minister and ironing out differences among the parties. The three major parties have held a series of meetings in the last six months and formed working committees to arrive at a consensus without any result. It is hoped that the six issues identified by the major parties this time would pave the way to arrive at a consensus soon to end the long drawn political stalemate in Nepal.
