They were making firecrackers without having any licence in the backyard of a house. Fire experts say the friction and heat might have resulted in the crackers catching fire. Virudhunagar Collector Hariharan has ordered raids by police and revenue authorities and search houses where crackers are made and stored illegally. After 39 persons were killed in a fire accident early this month in Muthalaipetti fire cracker factory, the State authorities had cancelled the licences of about 50 illegal units. Fire cracker manufacturing is the only job known to local villagers of Sivakasi.
