In Assam, three candidates have filed their nominations for the two Rajya Sabha seats for which the election is slated on 26th of this month. Ruling Congress and its coalition partner Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has fielded Ms. Najnin Faruqui and Mr. Silvius Condpan as their nominees. The combined Opposition has fielded Mr. Jayanta Baruah as their candidate. Scrutiny of nominations is being taken up today. The last day of withdrawal of nomination is fixed on 19th of this month.<br/> The Congress and its alliance partner Bodoland People’s Front together have strength of 68 in the 126-member State Assembly. The alliance also enjoys the support of seven Independent members. While the Opposition, at present has the combined strength of 46 members comprising the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), BJP, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), CPI and CPI-M. It is also enjoying the support of two Independent MLAs and the lone Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) legislator. According to the Returning Officer of the Rajya Sabha election, Mr. G.P.Das, the required quota of votes for a candidate to win is 43.
