Thousands of commuters were stranded as Train Services on the suburban branch of Central Railway in Mumbai are running late by an hour following an outbreak of fire at a signalling panel between Vidyavihar and Kurla stations on the main line after midnight yesterday.Reports reveal that a short circuit led to the fire. Central Railway spokesperson, VA Malegaonkar said in Mumbai today that the fire was brought under control immediately after midnight. However, the fire has caused damage to signaling equipment delaying local train services by 45 minutes to 1 hour. Of the 1577 suburban railway services operated by the Central Railway, 70% are functioning today and work is in progress to repair the signaling panel and train services will be fully restored within the next three to four days. Meanwhile, trains on the Harbour Line have been diverted to the Central line and four long distance trains have been cancelled including the Godavari Express and the Pragati Express. Railways have allowed Central Railway suburban commuters to use their season pass on the Mahim-Churchgate route on Western line. CR suburban commuters are also allowed to board long distance trains at Kalyan and Kasara till CST using their pass.The BEST in Mumbai is running around 200 additional bus services for the convenience of commuters. Mumbai University students affected by train disruptions were given extra time for their exams today. Around 38 lakh people commute on the Central Railway suburban network daily.
