In Thailand, thousands of people are trapped in their homes in one of the largest cities due to major flooding. According to regional authorities, tens of thousands of people are stranded in their homes and in hotels in the low-lying town of Hat Yai near the country's southern border. Hat Yai is a major city with a population of about 150,000. Television pictures showed abandoned cars in water so deep on major roads that only their roofs are visible. Train and air services have been disrupted and the weather bureau has warned of waves of up to five metres high offshore. Power and communication have been cut on the popular resort island of Koh Samui. More than 100 people have already died in major flooding in Thailand in the past three weeks.
