Thousands of people have taken a holy dip at the sangam since morning on the occasion of Makar sankranti. Elaborate security arrangements have been made on this occasion .Police controll room said that that no untoward incident was reported from magh mela area .

Makar Sankranti, the harvest festival, is being celebrated in different parts of the country with traditional fervour and enthusiasm today. The festival is known by various names in different states. It is known as Bhogali Bihu in Assam and West Bengal, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and Uttarayan in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

In Uttar Pradesh, a large number of people gathered at Sangam in Allahabad to take holy dip in the river Ganga on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. More from our correspondent:
