In Greece, tens of thousands of Greeks have staged a mass rally in capital Athens today in a protest about the decades-long dispute over the name Macedonia.

Macedonia and Greece have been at loggerheads for almost 30 years over the name issue, since Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.

Greece argues use of the name implies territorial claims on its own province of Macedonia. Protesters oppose Greek government proposals on resolving the issue.

The protest has been organised and funded by Greek diaspora groups, with the support of retired officer associations, cultural unions and church groups.
