Thousands march against tough new immigration law in Arizona

Tens of thousands of protesters have marched in a large-scale May Day rally through Los Angeles, against a tough new immigration law in Arizona that has triggered a nationwide outcry. At least 60,000 marchers turned downtown Los Angeles into a sea of red, white and blue, waving Stars and Stripes flags in a peaceful protest to demand the repeal of the Arizona legislation and federal immigration reform. A Los Angeles Fire Department official put the crowd at 60,000. Police declined to give an estimate, saying only that the eventual turnout may not reach the figure of 100,000 which had been expected. The rally was one of more than 70 planned across the United States as Hispanic organisations mobilised against Arizona's law.
